{"id":5925,"date":"2016-12-15T13:15:14","date_gmt":"2016-12-15T12:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.camping-martinet.fr\/villelongue-abbey\/"},"modified":"2023-06-05T10:14:57","modified_gmt":"2023-06-05T08:14:57","slug":"villelongue-abbey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.camping-martinet.fr\/en\/villelongue-abbey\/","title":{"rendered":"Villelongue Abbey"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Villelongue Abbey<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Cistercian abbey of Sainte-Marie de Villelongue, now a private estate, is located in the commune of Saint-Martin-le-Vieil, between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camping-martinet.fr\/carcassonne\/\">Carcassonne<\/a> and Castelnaudary, just 15 km from your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camping-martinet.fr\/en\/\">campsite in the Aude<\/a>.<\/h2>\n\n<p>Today, it&#8217;s a ruined abbey, but still boasts a beautiful cloister, adorned with ornate capitals characteristic of the Languedoc Southern Gothic style.<\/p>\n\n<p>Construction began in 1180 when the monk Guillaume received a donation from the Order of Citeaux.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"710\" height=\"348\" src=\"https:\/\/www.camping-martinet.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Abbaye-de-villelongue.jpg\" alt=\"villelongue Abbey 11\" class=\"wp-image-5211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.camping-martinet.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Abbaye-de-villelongue.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.camping-martinet.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Abbaye-de-villelongue-300x147.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>It soon became powerful thanks to the support of Simon de Montfort, the lord at war with the Cathars, who rewarded the monks for their support in his crusade against the Albigensians by giving them a large amount of land and the village of Saint-Martin-Le-Vieil.<\/p>\n\n<p>Thanks to its riches, the monks were able to embellish and enlarge it for two centuries.<\/p>\n\n<p>But in the 14th century, with the plague raging in the region, the Abbey saw its last hours of glory and the poorly managed estate became impoverished.<\/p>\n\n<p>During the French Revolution, the Abbey was partly saved and sold as national property to Guillaume Boussac, who transformed it into a farm, with the ruins on one side and the abbey dwelling transformed into a group of houses on the other.
